today i wanted to follow this trend
on youtube and talk about how much money
i made from youtube in 2020
and i think my situation is kind of
interesting here because i have three
different channels
in two different languages and i talk
about a variety of topics on them
my first channel is a lifestyle channel
my second channel is about languages and
my third channel
the one that you're watching right now
is about business and
cpms meaning how much i get per thousand
views
are really different on those channels
and i'm going to talk a lot
about it in this video and this way
we're going to be able to compare
which topic is the most lucrative on
youtube and how much money
you're able to make if you have almost 5
million followers
as i do on youtube so if you're
interested continue watching this video
now before i get started with
all the numbers and diving deep into
analytics i wanted to share my
motivation
in posting this video really i started
my youtube channel with no expectation
of
ever being able to make this money from
youtube
and i didn't have any experience in
media non-experience in video production
and
zero expectations from this youtube
channel
i was going through an admissions
process i was applying to
mbas uh being a russian girl you know in
st petersburg
i thought i was the only one uh taking
gmat test
i thought i was the only one preparing
for toefl and applying for full-ride
scholarships and i felt really lonely in
the process
so in december 2014 after i took my gmat
test
i decided that i need to document my
process because maybe
maybe i would be able to find people who
are like-minded maybe there are some
students in st
petersburg or somewhere around the world
that are going through the same process
and will be able to exchange some advice
and i just started posting and nothing
really happened i got some views
but then a major change happened in my
life we were invited to silicon valley
we got investment there for our company
and uh you know when something major
like that happens in your life people
tend to
express more interest and i decided to
document that i decided to document
how we got a first apartment a rental
apartment in the us
and my view started growing with that
now this channel is
at 1.2 million followers and i talk
about the variety of topics starting
with like lifestyle in america
and ending with investing now in 2016 i
thought maybe the topics that i cover in
russian
would be interesting to english-speaking
audience and i started my lingua marina
channel
and the presumption that i should just
post everything that i'm posting on the
russian channel was wrong
because my channel went through several
crises and
the views were down and i didn't know
what to do but then in 2017
i realized that the majority of people
who joined that channel
want english language content from me so
lingua marina is this channel where i
specifically teach people english and
english
i share my journey of learning english i
share my tips
and it has over 3.1 million followers
right now and you might ask marina but
why do you need a third channel
the thing is i was producing content in
english but none of my american friends
were
interested in that content and i really
wanted to share information that's
appealing to people around me
and this is why i started silicon valley
girl and even named it geographically
because i just wanted to create
something relevant for people who are
here
who are starting their business and this
channel is dedicated to
getting investment growing your business
investing money and
making money in general and the cpms on
this channel are
a lot higher compared to other channels
but we're gonna see this
a little later in this video the money
that i'm going to talk about
is money i'm getting from youtube
through their google adsense program
but the way that youtube works these
days is that there are so many
other ways you can make money from
youtube you can create courses
workbooks you can coach people you can
do one-on-ones
you can sell a product etc and youtube
is not this platform where you come
these days to get your millions of
followers being a youtuber doesn't mean
having millions of followers
i think these days being a youtuber
means being an expert
or just being passionate about some
particular topic and
consistently creating content on this
topic and then if you have 5 000
subscribers 10 000 subscribers
you're still able to monetize them and
you're still able to make
youtube one of your good sources of
income and if you're interested in doing
that if you're interested in growing
your channel

you can grow your channels the way i did
it organically without investing in ads
and about ways you can monetize your
channel later on once you get your first
thousands of subscribers and by the way
getting money from youtube
doesn't happen automatically right away
you need to get at least 1 000 followers
and 4
000 hours of watch time and the time
that it takes to get there
really depends on your content for
silicon valley girl it took me like two
months because
i knew how youtube worked and i started
with viral videos
with my russian channel it took me
almost a year to get monetized
it is also important to note that your
income is not only influenced by the
amount of views that you're getting
it is influenced by where people are
watching from
how old they are which topics they're
interested in because
if we take people who are interested in
business watching from the united states
australia and norway like these higher
uh paying geographies the thing is there
are
so many advertisers on youtube who for
example have their own business course
and this business course costs
one thousand dollars and they want to
advertise this course to people who will
be able to pay for it
and they are willing to spend a lot on
ads and this is why youtubers like me
who target that audience can get a chunk
of that money the way it works is that
advertisers pay
youtube say ten dollars youtube takes
four dollars fifty cents and the rest
goes to youtuber
so the numbers that you're going to see
that i'm going to show you are final
numbers that i'm getting of course i
need to pay taxes on top
but youtube takes no commission on top
of that
and then let's take another example
let's take a
student from a country where income is
not that high
those people with their 1 000 courses
wouldn't really want to advertise to
that audience because
those students won't be able to purchase
the course so youtubers who target that
audience would get kind of different
advertisers they would get companies
that sell cheaper products and who are
willing to invest
less in their ads and this is the way it
works on youtube in terms of cpm
again cpm is how much you make per
thousand of views
now let's look into my stats now let's
take a look at my russian channel first
this is when i started
one dollar a day 50 cents a day which
was kind of pretty cool
and by the way i was able to start
monetizing here you see
september 2015 so almost 10 months after
i started my channel
it took me that long to accumulate the
views and subscribers because
again i came to youtube i didn't know
how this platform worked
i didn't know what to do oh and then i
joined an mcn
something i regret a lot but this is a
completely different topic
and then i unjoined the mcn and this is
what started happening
my income started growing major growth
happened in
2019 and 2020 the years that i decided
to
double down on youtube create more
content let's take a look at 2020 in
particular
now here every time you see a spike that
means i released a new video
that accumulates more revenue and the
highest paying day
was april 14th i made 471 dollars that
day
so that day i started posting videos
about the pandemic
and this is what happens on youtube once
you start posting
on topics that are highly relevant to
almost everyone
who's watching youtube you just get a
lot more views and you get paid
more and then we decided that we're
going to leave san francisco start
traveling again
life-changing event and then every week
when i released a new vlog we see those
spikes
and those peaks and if you are able to
see this trend in general the revenue is
rising
because videos that you create they make
money
as long as people watch them and some
money makers i've created them like a
couple years ago and they're still being
watched by people
but the most important thing is that
that year i also introduced another
topic on my channel i started posting
about investing
and my investing videos you guys
probably aren't able to read in russian
but they're
number one and number two in my
analytics in terms of money making
but full disclaimer here i make
investing videos not because i want to
make more money from youtube
i am not able to motivate myself by
money
i'm only able to motivate myself by
topics that i'm truly passionate about
and in 2020 i started investing i
started researching like crazy
and because i'm an influencer by nature
i just wanted to share
everything i wanted to talk to people
about what i'm going through
and as a good side effect that started
making me more money so in general my
russian channel paid me 49
121 dollars in 2020 my cpm
rose by almost 63 percent
this is because i started posting on
more
lucrative topics and my income in
general grew by 43
again this is a combination of an
increased cpm
and increased views because they also
grew in 2020 because of all the
life-changing events
now let's look at my lingua marina
channel you see when i started it
it started making more money right away
around ten dollars a day
again because when you're vlogging
english you just target more and more
audience
but if you look at the whole graph we
see a huge
peak here this was june 2020 and i'm
gonna talk about this a little later
but in general you see that this channel
has grown significantly in terms of
revenue in the past year
and again i can connect this with people
staying at home and learning languages
from home and this is what i'm doing on
this channel
teaching people languages and i've seen
a lot of growth in terms of subscribers
by the end of the year i was getting
over a hundred thousand new subscribers
every month
and uh i've seen great growth uh in
terms of revenue because towards the end
of the year i was
making more than ten thousand dollars a
month from that channel
and this is the highest income ever i
was making from a single channel in a
month let's take a look at
20 20. so here we go let's talk about
this magic day june 21st uh when i made
545 dollars from this channel
that day and around that day my video
how to speak english fast and understand
native speakers
started taking off like crazy and this
is actually what is boosting my channel
these days it has over 5 million views
and it's still generating a lot more
views it is number two
in terms of income here uh because again
the topic of english is not the highest
paid on youtube the topic
but when you're helping people make
money and you see 10 high-paying jobs
you can learn from home
this is a video that i produce in 2019
and it's still
making over six thousand dollars a year
and so
you see towards the end of the year the
income increases and that's because i
thought
okay how to speak english fast and
understand native speakers generates a
lot of traffic i just need to create
more videos on that topic and again the
view started growing
and my income started growing but in
general what we see is that my cpm
dropped by 18 i can connect this again
with the pandemic
because before in 2019 i saw a lot of
different universities advertising their
products on top of my videos but the
thing is a lot of universities had to
cancel their programs in 2020
so i was getting less ads on this
channel however
because my views grew my revenue has
still grown by
28 and i was able to make 79 965
permit channel in 2020. now let's take a
look
at the channel with the highest cpm
silicon valley girl
just look at this cpm 13.76
it is almost three times higher than
lingua marina channel because this
channel is mostly watched from the us
high paying geography and it's about
business high paying topic and again i'm
not doing this because i just want more
money from youtube
i'm doing this because i love this topic
and i just love being relevant to people
who surround me
so with this channel we actually see
decline
in revenue in 2020 this is connected
with my personal circumstances we had to
spend uh five months in russia
and i was kind of depressed uh it was
really dark outside when you're
silicon valley girl like when you change
silicon valley girl and you're in russia
you really run out of content and i
tried making those talking hat videos
but i wasn't inspired
and this definitely reflected on the
number of views i was getting and
revenue
but i told myself you know marina the
only thing you should do
on youtube is be consistent so post even
if you don't feel like posting and i'm
so glad i did it because then i came
back to california and my views are up
and everything is going a lot better but
again you see some spikes here
with the videos taking off and
my money maker video his top nine small
business ideas for 2020
8 000 uh and this is video from
back in 2019 this video is from back in
2019
making me the majority of revenue from
this channel i was able to make 39
479 dollars in 2020. now all together
in 2020 youtube paid me 168
565 dollars for having
almost 5 million subscribers but again
you're not getting paid because you have
subscribers you get paid
if you get views and depending on where
these views are coming from
your cpm and your revenue is different i
wanted to wrap up this video guys with

this all happened in the past couple
